The 778S is Mission's first wireless music streamer, and it was made with one listener in mind: someone who loves great sound but also wants the simplicity of streaming done properly.

It fits naturally alongside the 778X amplifier, sharing the same compact half-width design and retro character that made that amplifier so well loved. But beneath the familiar face is something new: a full streaming hub with intuitive app control, flexible connectivity, and the kind of careful engineering Mission has always brought to its hardware.

Music has changed. The way we listen has changed. The 778S is Mission's answer to that shift, built to bring the same warmth and presence the brand is known for to every playlist, every station, every stream.

Key Features:

  • ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M 32-bit DAC, powered by a high-performance RK3399 dual-core processor.
  • Streaming Services supported: Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, TuneIn Internet Radio, Roon Ready, and AirPlay 2.
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5GHz), Gigabit Ethernet, USB storage support, and network shared storage via SMB.
  • RCA, balanced XLR analogue, coaxial and optical digital outputs, headphone output, and USB audio out.
  • Resolution: PCM up to 768kHz and DSD up to DSD512 via PC USB.
  • Format Support: DSD, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC and more.
  • Dedicated iOS/Android app, plus a 2.23" OLED display for at-a-glance information.

778 Series

The 778X marked Mission's return to integrated amplification after more than three decades. It set a new benchmark for what compact hi-fi could be, and it did so on its own terms.

The 778S continues that story. Same visual language, same engineering values, same commitment to music first. But where the 778X amplifies, the 778S streams, bringing modern connectivity into the 778 Series without compromising what made it special. For 778X owners, it's the missing piece. For anyone building a contemporary hi-fi system, it's a hub worth building around.

Mission built its reputation through loudspeakers that consistently punched above their price. The 778 Series brings that same spirit to electronics, pairing vintage aesthetics with forward-thinking performance in a way that feels entirely natural.

Streaming Platform and Control

The streaming platform inside the 778S was developed in close collaboration with Silent Angel, specialists in high-end network audio. Their engine runs at the core, optimised by Mission's own engineers to meet the sonic and stability standards the brand demands. The result is a platform that's rock solid in use and genuinely musical in character.

Control is handled through the Mission 778S app, which gives access to Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, TuneIn Radio, AirPlay 2, DLNA, and USB storage, all through a clean, responsive interface. For those already in the Roon ecosystem, the 778S is fully Roon Ready, certified for bit-perfect playback over Wi-Fi or Ethernet with no fuss.

Setup is quick. Connection via dual-band Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet takes minutes, and whether you're controlling playback from a phone, tablet, or desktop, the experience is consistent and intuitive throughout.

Engineering and Performance

The ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M 32-bit DAC sits at the heart of the 778S, bringing with it HyperStream architecture and Time Domain Jitter Elimination for ultra-low noise and exceptional signal integrity.

All incoming audio is precision upsampled to 352.8kHz or 384kHz, pushing digital artefacts well beyond the audible range and allowing the DAC to operate exactly where it performs best. Transients become cleaner, dynamics more expressive, and the soundstage takes on a more natural, open quality. This isn't processing for its own sake. It's careful engineering in service of the music.

For those who want to take things further, upsampling can be bypassed in favour of one of five DAC reconstruction filters, each offering a subtly different sonic character. A useful tool given the variable quality of streaming sources and digital formats.

Connectivity and Flexibility

The 778S is built to work with almost anything. Digital outputs include USB Audio, coaxial SPDIF, and optical, while analogue outputs cover both RCA and balanced XLR, giving it the flexibility to slot into a wide range of systems with ease.

The balanced XLR outputs deserve particular mention. Beyond reducing noise over longer cable runs, they unlock the full potential of high-resolution formats including DSD, bypassing the sample-rate constraints that digital-only connections can impose. The signal arrives at its destination exactly as the DAC intended it.

For private listening, the onboard headphone amplifier handles everything from everyday dynamic headphones to reference-grade over-ears with real authority. It's not an afterthought. In both streaming credentials and headphone performance, the 778S earns its place as a complete listening hub.
