Wharfedale Denton 1S Standmount Speakers

A New Compact Classic Reimagined

When Wharfedale introduced the original DENTON in 1967, it redefined the hi-fi landscape by proving that natural sound, fine craftsmanship, and exceptional value could coexist in a truly compact footprint. In 1974, the DENTON 1 shattered convention again—trading traditional wooden-box styling for a bold, utilitarian, 'late modernist' aesthetic.

The new Wharfedale DENTON 1S is fuelled by that exact same spirit of reinvention.

Far from a simple exercise in nostalgia, the DENTON 1S is a clean-sheet reinterpretation of the modern compact loudspeaker. It seamlessly marries cutting-edge acoustic engineering with an unmistakable British design identity. Inspired by the DENTON 1’s original philosophy, it adopts a sophisticated coaxial point-source architecture to deliver stunning precision and coherence. Born from an engineering challenge to explore new sonic frontiers, the DENTON 1S is playful yet technically serious, confident yet refined—a contemporary masterpiece that honors an enduring legacy.

Coaxial Precision: One Acoustic Centre

At the heart of the DENTON 1S is a brand-new, sophisticated two-way coaxial driver. By concentrically positioning a 25mm silk-dome tweeter directly within the centre of a 165mm advanced polypropylene cone, both drivers radiate from a single acoustic centre. This inherent time alignment and phase coherence results in:

• A Unified Presentation: Seamless transitions between frequencies with rock-solid stereo imaging.
• An Immersive Soundstage: A wide, three-dimensional sonic image that maintains a consistent tonal balance across the entire room.
• Off-Axis Consistency: Whether you are sitting in the sweet spot or moving around the room, the sound remains beautifully smooth and coherent.

Design Benefit: The coaxial configuration drastically minimises front-baffle interruption. This allows for a smaller, more rigid cabinet that enhances structural integrity while maintaining a clean, minimalist aesthetic.

Tuned for Musical Coherence

Led by Wharfedale’s Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau, the development of the DENTON 1S placed a fanatical focus on crossover integration. Through exhaustive computer modelling and critical listening sessions, the crossover network was meticulously tuned to ensure the drivers operate as a single, flawless system.

The result is a loudspeaker completely free from tonal discontinuities. Music flows with natural timing, convincing scale, and a fatigue-free dynamic expression—qualities typically reserved for significantly larger floorstanding speakers.

Big Sound, Compact Form

Do not let its modest footprint fool you; the DENTON 1S delivers remarkable low-frequency authority. Thanks to a carefully optimised 11.5-litre internal volume and a precision-tuned bass reflex enclosure, this compact standmount digs all the way down to 45Hz (-6dB).

Advanced Driver Technology

• The Woofer: The newly developed advanced polypropylene cone delivers a warm, textured, and highly controlled bass response. This material engineered for high rigidity, low mass, and superb self-damping, ensuring lightning-fast transient accuracy and minimal midrange coloration.
• The Tweeter: High frequencies are incredibly detailed and silky smooth, backed by the tweeter's custom-damped rear chamber and high-flux motor system.
• Amplifier Friendly: With a 88dB sensitivity and a benign 8-ohm nominal impedance, the DENTON 1S is exceptionally easy to drive, making it a perfect partner for everything from vintage tube gear to modern integrated streaming amplifiers.

Placement Flexibility: Stand, Shelf, or Wall

The DENTON 1S is engineered to adapt to your lifestyle, not dictate it. While it thrives as a traditional standmount speaker, it is uniquely equipped for versatile placement throughout contemporary homes:

• On-Wall Ready: Features a discreet rear 3/8” mounting point for secure wall installation.
• "Brilliance" EQ Control: A custom-engineered rear-panel toggle allows you to subtly tailor the speaker's tonal balance. Effortlessly optimise its performance for free-space standing, bookshelf placement, or near-wall boundaries.

Crafted for Modern Living

Visually, the DENTON 1S translates classic Wharfedale Heritage into modern interior design. Elegant cabinet curves, a luxurious matte paint finish, a traditional cloth grille, and retro-inspired badging beautifully blur the lines between past and present.

Beneath its sophisticated skin lies an advanced acoustic fortress: multi-layer panel construction, extensive internal bracing, and targeted damping materials work in harmony to completely suppress unwanted cabinet resonances.

Contemporary Finish, Timeless Identity

Wharfedale’s legendary cabinet craftsmanship reaches new heights here. To seamlessly blend with design-forward spaces, the DENTON 1S is available in three stunning matte finishes: Matte Black, Matte White, Matte Blue (All-new)

Clean. Confident. Contemporary.

The Wharfedale DENTON 1S is proof that timeless heritage and modern acoustic innovation don't just coexist—they elevate one another to an art form.
